New Data Reveals Travelers are Waiting to Book for Best Deals

 

DALLAS, October 28, 2024—Americans are trading in their sleigh rides for car rides this holiday season, as they seek comfort in familiar, flexible, and budget-friendly travel options more than ever before. New data from Motel 6 and Studio 6 reveals that over half of those traveling to celebrate winter holidays this year will hit the road to their destination (51%) rather than take to the sky (13%).

 

The study, which surveyed 2,000 Americans who plan to celebrate winter holidays this upcoming season, found an increase in road travelers from last year (+2% OnePoll 2023), a choice driven by the proximity of their destination (46%) and the desire to save money (26%). For many, the joy of a road trip lies in the journey itself, believing road trips make the travel experience more enjoyable (80%), which may be because they admit to having a preferred or “assigned” seat in the car when traveling with family (39%).

 

“There’s just something comforting and nostalgic about packing into the family car with a trunk filled with gifts and casseroles and road-tripping to your holiday celebrations. Cherishing Familiar Places & Traditions

From the family hometown to grandma’s house, travelers plan to lean into a sense of familiarity during the holiday season and visit the places they know and love rather than explore somewhere new (63%). In fact, many admit that visiting or traveling to see family and friends is one of their favorite holiday traditions (50%) and most use their paid time off to spend quality time with loved ones (54%).

 

Navigating Holiday Lodging

Often, the destination for the celebration doubles as makeshift lodging, as most Americans who celebrate winter holidays will stay at family (52%) or friends’ homes (14%). However, this can lead to overcrowded houses (30%) and challenging sleeping arrangements, prompting travelers to seek alone time within less than a day (19.6 hours) into the trip on average. To avoid sleeping on the floor (26%) or making do with the couch (22%), one in four travelers will opt for a hotel or motel this holiday season.

 

Late Planning

This holiday season, Americans are juggling the excitement of celebrations and travel with the realities of a busy and challenging year. Motel 6 found that holiday travelers expect to plan their trips three weeks in advance on average, with some (23%) not planning to book ahead at all. It’s no wonder that holiday travel plans are often left to the last minute, with many delaying their holiday bookings due to financial constraints (39%) or in hopes of finding better deals (35%), which in turn causes stress (64%). Discounts play a big role in influencing these budget-conscious travelers (21%). New data reveals hotels are the preferred lodging option this summer; cost/budget will have an impact on travel plans

Dallas, May 15, 2024 – Summer travel is about to heat up, and new data from leading economy lodging brands Motel 6 and Studio 6 reveals that nearly eight in 10 Americans who will drive to their summer travel destination said that driving makes the experience more enjoyable (77%).

The study, which surveyed 2,000 Americans with summer leisure plans, also found that travelers agree there is a distinction between a “trip” and a “vacation” (80%).

“There’s nothing better than cruising on the highway with the windows down, sun shining and music playing, especially when you’re surrounded by your loved ones – even those on four legs,” said Julie Arrowsmith, President and CEO of G6 Hospitality, parent company of Motel 6 and Studio 6. “Whether you’re the planner or just along for the ride, Motel 6 and Studio 6 provide pet-friendly and affordable lodging so you can relax, enjoy the journey and focus on creating memories.”

Are We There Yet?

Methods of transportation are varied this summer; most intend to drive to at least one destination (60%), while ot

hers will fly (55%) or ride the train (8%). On the road, many admit to taking on classic roles such as the “relaxation reminder” (23

%), “trip coordinator” (28%), “activities and excursion guide” (22%) and “backseat driver” (10%). Although the journey to the vacation can be its own adventure, arriving at the hotel or destination is the top indicator to travelers that they are officially on vacation (59%).

Keeping It Budget-Friendly

Almost nine in 10 (87%) of those with summer leisure plans say that cost and budget will impact their travel. This may also be why discount programs while traveling are more important now than in previous years (79%, an increase of 13% since 2023). Lodging Tendencies

With a variety of lodging options to choose from, most will stay at a hotel (61%), followed by rental homes (27%) and staying at a family member’s home (22%). When staying in a hotel, most travelers admit to not unpacking and keeping their items in their luggage (57%), though many still use the dresser (34%) or closet (47%).

Trip or Vacation?

Vacations look different for everyone, and over half (53%) defined “vacation” as travel for relaxation. Others feel that a “trip” is defined as travel for a purpose (32%), such as an event, or as simply getting out of their hometown (30%). Travelers are looking to relax and unplug this summer (59%), so it’s no surprise that nearly half will attend a family or friend reunion (48%), and over one-third will explore a new city (36%). When considering the timing of their adventure, only 9% believe holiday weekends are the ideal time to travel, while over two-fifths (43%) enjoy a mix of holiday and off-holiday weekends.

DALLAS, Jan. 10, 2024 – In support of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, G6 Hospitality, the parent company of Motel 6 and Studio 6, is renewing and expanding its long-standing efforts to combat human trafficking and raise awareness around the widespread issue.

This month, G6 Hospitality will launch a new version of its best-in-class training, “The Room Next Door,” a comprehensive program the company developed to help hotel teams identify the signs of human trafficking in the lodging industry. The training, required at every Motel 6 and Studio 6 location, is aimed at building awareness of the signs and response protocol for human trafficking.

The company is also renewing ongoing partnerships with law enforcement agencies and survivor advocate organizations in 2024, including:

  • AHLA Foundation: G6 Hospitality is a longtime partner of AHLA and the AHLA Foundation. G6 was an inaugural donor to the AHLA Foundation “No Room for Trafficking” (NRFT) Survivor Fund. Farah Bhayani, G6 Hospitality General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer, co-chairs the advisory council that champions the hotel industry’s unified efforts to support human trafficking survivors, including how NRFT Survivor Fund grants are distributed to organizations that focus on survivor support.
  • New Friends New Life: The company partners with this survivor-focused organization that provides access to education, job training, interim financial assistance and mental health support for survivors of human trafficking and exploitation. Adam Cannon, G6 Hospitality Chief Brand Officer, is a member of the organization’s Board of Directors.
  • It’s A Penalty: The company is continuing its support for the seventh annual campaign around the “Big Game” this February in Las Vegas. The partnership will work to raise awareness and prevent human trafficking in the Las Vegas community through a variety of initiatives and events.
  • National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC): G6 Hospitality continues to partner with NCMEC to send Amber Alerts through its property management system directly to hotel teams. 2023 was the inaugural year of the program, and it has already proven to be successful in raising awareness of missing children.
  • Marinus Analytics LLC: G6 Hospitality leverages Marinus’ Traffic Jam software reporting, which data mines and identifies advertisements for adult services at hotels.

84% will travel for holidays, according to new data from Motel 6

 

DALLAS, NOVEMBER 1, 2023 – This festive season is sure to be a big one, as new data from leading economy lodging brand Motel 6 reveals that Americans who are celebrating a winter holiday are planning to enjoy an average of 10 or more gatherings this year.

 

In its sixth annual holiday travel survey, Motel 6 heard from over 2,000 respondents who celebrate a winter holiday and found that this flurry of festivities is expected to lead to significant travel. Eighty-four percent of respondents plan to travel to at least one gathering, and of those, over half (52%) expect to take more trips than last year.

 

Travel Trends Fur the Whole Family

This holiday season, 85% say the joy of spending time with friends and family outweighs the challenges of travel. When it comes to lodging, two-thirds (65%) of respondents traveling plan to stay at a hotel, an increase of nearly 20% since last year (SWNS 2022). And they’re bringing furry family members with them. Three out of five (60%) respondents note that pets will be joining their holiday journeys, up from 22% in 2022 (SWNS 2022).

 

Gathering once just isn’t enough – respondents plan to celebrate some holidays multiple times, bringing the average number of holiday gatherings per person to more than 10.

 

Family Time Important, but so is Moderation

The winter season continues to be a time to come together with loved ones, with two-thirds (66%) of respondents noting a preference for a traditional holiday celebration with family, while only 20% opt to take a solo trip. Still, Americans agree that the excitement of family gatherings can cause social batteries to run down quickly. Over half (53%) of respondents look forward to alone time four hours into a holiday, while nearly one in five (19%) say it takes just one to two hours for them to start looking forward to alone time.

 

“The final months of the year are filled with love, excitement and festivities with friends and family.
